You know they hunt celebrities. Stalkers by any other name, they’re invasive and intrusive, on a quest to steal snapshots of peoples’ lives. Anyone with a high enough profile is in danger of being targeted, tailed, and trapped forever in a still frame. What you probably don’t know is that even cars have to deal with paparazzi.
If you follow us on Facebook, you may have already seen this video. To kick off our Year of the Horse 2015 Mustang coverage, we want to take a closer look at how Ford was able to keep the 50th Anniversary ponycar under wraps.
Those rumors and stories you hear about paparazzi hiding in bushes or staking out someone’s house from a tree are not made up. They will do whatever it takes to get a picture of their prey, and while celebrities can shutter their windows and put up fences, how do you hide a car on a test track?
Disorienting paintjobs are a start, but Ford took things a step further with the 2015 Mustang, covering it with a soft-vinyl body cover. You can see in the video as they adhere, Velcro, and zip up the outer layer, hiding the ‘stang under an unsightly black overcoat. Even the shape is distorted by padding and plastic add-ons. As a result, while someone pointing a camera at the car zooming around the track might know they’re seeing a Mustang through their viewfinder, there’s no way they’ll have any idea what the new car actually looks like. That way, the hype can continue to build until the company is ready to make a stunning reveal, as we saw last month.
The 2015 Mustang is slated to arrive this fall. For questions, or to just express your continued excitement, leave a comment, email us at comments@leithmail.com, or talk to one of us at Leith Ford.
